Lewis Chapel A.M.E. Church: A Legacy of Faith
and Perseverance In 1916, the Albion
Malleable Iron Company brought 53 African
Americans from Pensacola, Florida, to Albion,
Michigan, and established a
nondenominational church for them. This
church served as a spiritual home for multiple
congregations, many of which would
eventually form their own churches. Lewis
Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church is
proud to be the oldest African American
church in Albion. For 107 years, we have
continued the mission started by faithful
Christian pioneers who laid the foundation
on Culver Street, now carried forward at
our current home, 522 West Center Street.
In 1950, under the leadership of Rev. Charles
Curry, the congregation moved into this
building—a milestone made possible by a
devoted few. Over the years, we have been
blessed with 33 pastors, including our
current leader, Rev. Gabrielle Avery, who
brings a clear vision and strong dedication
to our future. Today, Lewis Chapel stands at
a crossroads. Like many churches, we’ve
faced challenges—from the COVID-19
pandemic to the aging of our congregation
and the passing of beloved members. Our youth
numbers have declined, but we remain
committed to revitalizing our youth ministry
by developing inviting programs for young
people, especially those not currently
engaged in church life. Despite financial
difficulties, our resolve is strong. We will
continue to serve the mission God has
placed before us. Our building, while
beautiful on the outside, is in need of major
repairs. We face challenges such as a
deteriorating parking lot, ongoing heating
and cooling system issues, outdated sound
and technology equipment, and the need to
refurbish our kitchen and lower level. Our
goal is to raise the necessary funds to
address these needs. To support this effort, we
invite the community to join us in a joyful
celebration of family, friends, and faith. We
are organizing a “Birthday Celebration”
fundraiser, with captains representing each
month of the year. The campaign runs from
April 13 through May 2025, and will
culminate in a grand celebration on May 18,
2025, during our 11:00 a.m. service,
followed by brunch and birthday cakes for
each month. We thank you for your prayers,
support, and generosity as we continue the
work of the Lord. Yours in Christ, Mae Ola
