Description: “Maude’s Afternoon Tea”
planned by Homer Historical
Society

Planning ahead?
Looking for something to do?
The Homer Historical Society’s
new event, called Maude’s
Afternoon Tea, will be
Saturday, June 11 from 2 p.m.
to 4:30 p.m. at Blair
Historical Farm, 26645 M-60
East, Homer, MI, and it fits
the bill as a perfect idea for
a summer afternoon. Shaded
seating will be in three
locations: On the porch of
the home built in 1875 for
Albert Blair and his family,
in the breezeway of the 1910
barn, and the historic Albion
Town Hall that was built in
1890 at the corner of F Drive
South and M-99. It was
donated to the Homer
Historical Society in 2005
when Albion Township had no
more use for it. It was moved
to the Blair Farm in 2006.
Homer Historical Society
president Dee Camp and the
event planning committee think
it’s an ideal setting for a
tea party with appetizers, tea
sandwiches, a sweet dessert
and, of course, tea. But
that’s not all. A quilt
display featuring the
Historical Society’s
collection, a silent auction,
and all of the buildings will
be open to explore.
The planning
committee has named the event
Maude’s Afternoon Tea to honor
Maude and Bessie Blair who
grew up living in the house
and who were the only children
of Albert and Ella Blair.
“Outside on a hot summer day,
they enjoyed having tea there
with friends. When we had to
cancel our annual Herb
Workshop this past winter due
to Covid, we did some
brainstorming and thought this
outdoor event would be
appropriate, fun, and a much-
needed fundraiser for our
organization, and indeed there
is the feeling that Maude will
be hosting the tea in spirit,”
Camp said.
“We hope people will come
with friends and let us know
who they want to sit with when
they call (517) 524-7348 to
make a reservation. That way
we can put them together. We
want to be sure everyone
enjoys themselves and has a
special day,” Camp said.
Reservations are required
along with a $25 per person
donation. Checks should be
made out to the Homer
Historical Society and sent to
Dee Camp, P.O. 146, Homer, MI
49245.
“We are happy about the new
event that enables people to
have a different experience at
this historical site, and it
supports our mission of
restoring Blair Historical
Farm and preserving local area
history,” Camp said. The Homer
Historical Society is a 501 c3
organization that has been
dedicated to this goal since
1974 when Maude Blair donated
it to the organization for
that purpose.
“After all these years, we
have significant repairs to do
again, and they are expensive.
It’s an old house, and old
houses need constant upkeep,”
Camp said. Current projects
include gutters for the house
and the town hall, landscaping
to drain rain water away from
the house with its aging
Michigan basement, repainting
some of the buildings
exteriors, and electrical
work.
Budgets for the projects were
discussed at the
organization’s April 28 annual
meeting. “We depend on
donations from our programs
like Maude’s Afternoon Tea,
but we also welcome, and
depend on, donations from
people who want to support our
work or who want to honor
someone with a memorial
contribution,” Camp said.
Contributions can be mailed to
the Homer Historical Society,
P.O Box 146, Homer, MI 49245,
and they can also be done
online using the secure
Donorbox link available on the
Homer Historical Society’s
website
www.homerhistoricalsociety.org
and using the blue DONATE NOW
button near the bottom of the
home page in the “Support the
Homer Historical Society”
section. “It easy, safe, and
quick. Every contribution
makes a difference,” Camp
said.
