Homer’s Herb Workshop
The Homer Historical Society has been holding its Herb Workshop for 28 years and still manages to address new topics, knowledgeable speakers and a diverse menu every year. It will be held Saturday, February 1 at the Homer United Methodist Church, 101 East Adams Street in Homer. The program starts at 9:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast.
Both Joe Marciano, the chef at Albion Malleable Brewery, and his wife Kathryn Marciano coordinated the food preparation last year and are returning to help the Homer Historical Society’s Herb Workshop committee prepare this meal.
The menu features a mid-morning snack followed by lunch with a chicken marsala entre and tiramisu dessert. Recipes for menu items are included in the day’s program each person attending will receive. The program will end at approximately 3 p.m. following a day filled with information.
Program speakers include Bruce Rapp, Scott Spencer, and Barbara Bradley. Rapp, from Eckford, will talk about restoring local history one building at a time. This topic highlights his work over many years restoring Eckford’s diverse historical buildings. Spencer is a well-known landscaper designer from Jackson who will offer landscaping advice and ideas on getting your yard and gardens ready for spring. Bradley, who manages the National House Inn in Marshall, will share interesting stories and insights on managing a bed and breakfast and coordinating the various aspects of events including tea parties that are held there.
Homer Historical Society president Dee Camp said the day offers the opportunity for a well-deserved winter break. “There will be craft items for sale and a silent auction in addition to the great food and the interesting program,” she said.
The Herb Workshop is a fundraiser for the organization’s ongoing historical restoration projects and historical preservation work at Blair Historical Farm which was donated to the organization in 1974 by Maude Blair when the organization was formed. Miss Blair was an
educator dedicated to children and to Homer’s history. She was also the granddaughter of Dr. George W. Blair, an early settler and Homer’s first medical doctor.
