History of Psychiatric Institutions Topic of Presentation at March Calhoun County Genealogical Society Meeting
Join the Calhoun County Genealogical Society (CCGS) for an evening lecture, “Asylums: A Dark History of Psychiatric Institutions,” with local educator Jody Owens at 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2019. Owens will show attendees the process patients went through to be committed and discharged. She will discuss commitment reasons and treatment methods for this mental health service of yesteryear.
Jody Owens is a lifelong Battle Creek resident. She graduated from Hope College and taught for many years in Athens, Michigan. She continues to be an educator by presenting talks to area organizations on topics of historical interest. Owens serves as secretary of the Historical Society of Battle Creek and volunteers at the HSBC Archives.
The event will be held as part of the CCGS monthly meeting, located at the Marshall Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints Church, 16036 Old 27 N, in Marshall. The meeting is free and open to the public.
