Description:

A participant in the little-
known relationship of Jewish migration to China shares this remarkable history for
Albion College’s 2018 Yinger Lecture on Tuesday, September 25, at 4:30 p.m. in the Bobbitt Visual Arts
Center. A documentary about China’s role in helping Jewish families escape Nazi Germany, will be screened at 7 pm. on Wednesday,
September 26, at the Bohm Theatre.
Presenter Liliane Willens was born to Russian Jewish immigrant parents in China, grew up in Shanghai before
and during the Second World War (witnessing the Japanese military occupation of the city), and remained in the
country into the early years of the People's Republic. Eventually emigrating to the U.S., Willens earned a
doctorate in French language and literature. and taught these subjects at Boston
College and Massachusetts Institute of Technology. While in academia, she published a book on Voltaire and a number of articles on
18th century France. Willens later worked for the U.S. Agency for International
Development and the Peace Corps.
Willens will take questions following the Wednesday screening of “Above the Drowning Sea,” a documentary
sharing the experiences of Jewish refugees in Shanghai and the Chinese diplomat who assisted their escape from Nazi- controlled Europe. The
film is narrated by Julianna Margulies and was produced by Rene Balcer (writer and
executive producer for Law & Order).
The annual Yinger lecture is given in honor of the many
members of the Yinger family who are graduates of Albion College. The Rev. Emma Bancroft (class of 1904) and
George Daniel Yinger (class of 1904) were the parents of six Albion College alumni. The lectureship was
established by families and friends, to sponsor
distinguished lecturers in religion, drama, English literature, history, and sociology.
This presentation is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Albion College history
department at (517)629- 0396.
