Grammy-winning Dom Flemons brings history to life in Albion on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m., as the Dom Flemons Duo takes the stage in Washington Gardner School Auditorium. Their concert of traditional African-American music is an Albion Big Read event, as well as the Albion College Coy James Memorial Lecture.
An artist who has performed music from the 1700s through the 1950s, Flemons has spent more than a decade focused on traditional forms of African-American music including ragtime, string band, Piedmont blues and more He was a co-founder of the Grammy-winning Carolina Chocolate Drops, hailed for their success in bringing traditional music to modern audiences.
Big Read assistant director Maddie Drury explains that the Dom Flemons Duo concert reflects on important theme in "Fahrenheit 451," the 2016 Albion Big Read selection. The novel illustrates a society in crisis, as books and history are lost to its citizens. On a smaller scale, "the loss of these things happens in our own world as well. The Dom Flemons Duo give us access to a history they have long been recovering: the rich history of African-American old-time music," Drury says.
This concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Big Read director Jess Roberts a tjroberts@albion.edu, 517/629-0232.
